Summary
The paper surveys fundamental topics related to heat transfer and fluid flow in finned-tube heat exchangers, such as the effect of fin and tube spacings on operation, correlations for predicting heat transfer coefficient and friction factor, and calculation procedures for thermal variables in the presence of combined heat and mass transfer. New fin geometries for enhanced heat transfer, based on slits or louvers, are also reviewed and a method is reported which allows a comparison to be made with traditional geometries, based on the overall energy performance.
