Summary

THE AIR TRANSPORT FACTOR (ATF) IS APPLICABLE ONLY TO COOLING SYSTEMS AND IS DEFINED AS THE SPACE SENSIBLE HEAT REMOVAL RATE DIVIDED BY THE POWER INPUT INTO THE CIRCULATING AIR FANS (SUPPLY AND RETURN). IT IS A POWER RATIO RATHER THAN AN ENERGY RATIO ; THERE IS NO TIME ELEMENT IN THE CALCULATION NEITHER DOES IT CONSIDER THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SPACE BEING SERVED AND FAN POWER WHICH MAY BE VARIABLE. HOWEVER, IN SPITE OF ITS LIMITATIONS, THE HIGHER THE VALUE OF THE ATF FOR ANY GIVEN SITUATION, THE MORE EFFECTIVE IS THE FAN ENERGY BEING UTILIZED. FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN GUIDELINES ARE GIVEN WHICH, IF FOLLOWED, WILL LEAD TO INCREASED ATF. E.W.S.
