Summary

The author reports the point of view of an Italian manufacturer of unitary absorption machines. The sales of such installations have been booming in Europe since 1994, because of the increasing concern about the well known environmental problems, although this technology is not yet widely employed. Most of the installations of this firm (58%) refer to finance and services industry, the others are working for residential air conditioning or for manufacturing industry; 20 kilowatts is the typical size of these machines, the maximum being about 35-45 kilowatts. Some examples of not conventional applications (mainly for food industry) are mentioned. Recent trends in developing new absorption machines include heat pumps for heating service at about 50 deg C, total energy unities (for simultaneous cooling and heating) and an innovative absorption machine capable of exploiting part of the absorption heat for the distillation.
