Summary

PATANKAR-SPALDING IMPLICIT FINITE DIFFERENCE SCHEME IS EMPLOYED TO SOLVE THE BOUNDARY LAYER EQUATIONS FOR LAMINAR FREE CONVECTIVE FLOW OF SUPERCRITICAL HELIUM IN PRESENCE OF A PLANE VERTICAL ISOTHERMAL SURFACE. RESULTS ARE OBTAINED FOR THREE DIFFERENT PRESSURES OF 233, 304 AND 355 KPA AND FOR VARIOUS VALUES OF TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE, FROM 1 TO 13.5 K. BASED ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED, AN EMPIRICAL CORRELATION IS PROPOSED TO CALCULATE THE LOCAL VALUES OF THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT FOR A WIDE RANGE OF RAYLEIGH NUMBERS.
