Summary
AN APPROACH TO OPTIMIZING DESIGN OF LOW-POWER PLASTIC STIRLIN CRYOCOOLERS BY VARIATIONAL CALCULATION IS DESCRIBED. THE STATIC CONDUCTION, SHUTTLE AND RADIATION HEAT LOSSES, AS WELL AS REGENERATOR INEFFICIENCY HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED. A TAPERED DISPLACER MODEL HAS BEEN CALCULATED AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ANALYZED. FINALLY, A SET OF PARAMETERS FOR A FIVE-STAGE STIRLING CRYOCOOLER WITH AN OPERATING TEMPERATURE OF 8.5 K AND A REFRIGERATION POWER OF 3 MILLiW, HAS BEEN GIVEN, WHICH CAN BE USED AS REFERENCE PARAMETERS IN THE PRACTICAL DESIGN.
