Performance of a mixed refrigerant J-T refrigerator with a phase separator.

Summary

Temperatures as low as -200°C can be obtained in a single stage using auto refrigerant cascade or J-T refrigerators operating with mixtures. Conventional air conditioning compressors can be used in these systems because of the low operating pressures (typically 20/3 bars). One way of improving the reliability of these systems and prevent freezing of oil and high boilers at low temperatures is to use a phase separator (flash chamber) where most of the high boilers are separated at a temperature of -20 to -30°C and returned to the compressor. Since the lubricating oil is normally soluble in the high boilers, the lubricating oil is also returned to the compressor at relatively high temperatures. In this paper we present the results obtained by the authors in their prototype refrigerator with argon-hydrocarbon mixtures.
