Summary

WHEN HEAT TRANSFER FROM A FIN IS PURELY CONVECTIVE THE HEAT LOSS IS LINEARLY PROPORTIONAL TO TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE. HOWEVER IN MANY CASES FACTORS OTHER THAN PURE CONVECTION ARE PRESENT AND HEAT LOSS BECOMES PROPORTIONAL TO A POWER-LAW TYPE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE. AN ANALYSIS OF THIS SITUATION HAS LED THE AUTHORS TO PUBLISH A SOLUTION HITHERTO NOT AVAILABLE. D.W.H.
