AN OVERVIEW OF THE MULTILAYER INSULATION SYSTEM FOR THE SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER.

Summary

THE MULTILAYER INSULATION (MLI) SYSTEM FOR THE SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER (SSC) DIPOLE CRYOSTAT IS DESIGNED TO MEET STRICT THERMAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS WHILE MAINTAINING INSULATING INTEGRITY OVER THE 25 YEAR LIFE OF THE ACCELE THE MLI SYSTEM IS COMPRISED OF INDIVIDUAL BLANKETS INSTALLED ON SURFACES AT 80, 20, AND 4 K RESPECTIVELY. THE EVOLUTION OF BLANKET GEOMETRY AND MATERIALS SELECTION BASED UPON RESULTS OF THERMAL MEASUREMENTS MADE ON SEVERAL MLI CONFIGURATIONS IS PRESENTED. THE PRESENT MLI SYSTEM IS REVIEWED IN DETAILS, WITH DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTING THE MEASURED THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF THE 80 AND 20 K SYSTEMS. ADDITIONALLY, LARGE-SCALE FABRICATION TECHNIQUES ARE PRESENTED WHICH ALLOW A COST-EFFECTIVE WAY TO MASS-PRODUCE MLI BLANKETS OF CONSISTENT GEOMETRY. FINALLY, BLANKET DESIGN FEATURES WHICH PROVIDE A METHOD OF MEASURING QUALITY CONTROL DURING CRYOSTAT PRODUCTION ARE DISCUSSED.
