Summary

THE PRESENCE OF THE FINS GIVES RISE TO A RECIRCULATING FLOW IN THE SPACE BETWEEN TWO SUCCESSIVE FINS. COMPUTATIONS ARE PERFORMED FOR THE PERIODIC FULLY DEVELOPED FLOW, IN WHICH THE VELOCITY FIELD REPEATS ITSELF IN SUCCESSIVE INTER-FIN REGIONS. ALTHOUGH THE RECIRCULATING FLOW AIDS MIXING AND TENDS TO INCREASE THE HEAT TRANSFER, THE OBSTRUCTION PROVIDED BY THE FINS CAUSES THE MAIN THROUGHFLOW TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE TUBE WALL. THE NET EFFECT IS THAT, FOR FLUIDS LIKE AIR, THERE IS ACTUALLY A DECREASE IN HEAT TRANSFER TO THE FINNED TUBE. ONLY FOR HIGH PRANDTL NUMBER FLUIDS LIKE WATER CAN SOME INCREASE IN HEAT TRANSFER BE ACHIEVED.
