Summary

THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF THE COMPRESSION PROCESS IN RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS IS DIFFICULT EVEN WITH COMPUTERS AND AUTOMATIC CALCULATION PROCEDURES BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF COEFFICIENTS CONTROLLING HEAT TRANSFER AND FRICTION LOSSES. NEVERTHELESS IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECOGNIZE DIFFERENT KINDS OF LOSSES AND TO FIND, AT LEAST FROM A QUALITATIVE POINT OF VIEW, THE DEPENDENCE OF EACH OF THEM ON THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE COMPRESSOR (PRESSURE RATIO, CONDENSING PRESSURE, ROTATIONAL SPEED). AVERAGED ISENTROPIC EFFICIENCY VALUES, CALCULATED FROM DATA SUPPLIED BY DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS OF OPEN TYPE RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS, ARE CONSIDERED REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PERFORMANCE OF TODAY'S COMPRESSORS. AS REGARDS THE LOSSES RESULTING FROM SUCH ISENTROPIC EFFICIENCY VALUES, AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SUBDIVIDE TOTAL LOSSES INTO SINGLE TERMS, ACCORDING TO THE QUALITATIVE DEPENDENCE DRAWN FROM THEORY. E.
