Summary

A NEW DATA CENTRE BUILDING IN THE USA HAS AN AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM WHICH USES A EUTECTIC THERMAL STORAGE TANK IN THE CHILLED WATER CIRCUIT. THE AIM IS TO SATISFY AN EIGHT HOUR PEAK PERIOD WHICH OCCURS AT HIGH ELECTRICITY TARIFF. THE EUTECTIC MATERIAL IS A MIXTURE OF INORGANIC SALTS, MAINLY SODIUM SULPHATE. IT IS SUPPLIED IN 45,000 SEALED PLASTIC CONTAINERS WHICH LOCK TOGETHER AND STACK IN SUCH A WAY AS TO ALLOW FREE CHILLED WATER FLOW BETWEEN THEM. THE ADVANTAGE OF A EUTECTIC OVER AN ICE SYSTEM IS THAT EUTECTICS ARE AVAILABLE WITH HIGHER FREEZING POINTS ENABLING STANDARD WATER CHILLERS TO BE USED FOR CHARGING THE SYSTEM WITH LOWER ENERGY COSTS DUE TO HIGHER EVAPORATING TEMPERATURES.
