Summary

THE AUTHOR REVIEWS SEVERAL SYSTEMS USED TO REDUCE THE CAPACITY OF THE REFRIGERATING PLANT, BY MEANS OF COOLING THERMAL STORAGE WHEN THE THERMAL LOAD IS DISCONTINUOUS ; IN THIS CASE, IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE ENERGY COST, BY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF REDUCED ELECTRIC FARES AT NIGHT. FOR THERMAL STORAGE IN REFRIGERATION, DIFFERENT MEDIA CAN BE USED: CHILLED WATER, ICE, OR EUTECTIC SOLUTIONS, CONTAINED IN SMALL SPHERES. AS FOR THE CHARGE AND THE DISCHARGE OF THE ACCUMULATION SYSTEM, DIFFERENT TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS ARE POSSIBLE ; EACH OF THEM IS ILLUSTRATED AND CRITICALLY DISCUSSED. MOREOVER SOME SIGNIFICANT EXAMPLES OF THE APPLICATION OF THE THERMAL STORAGE CONCEPT ARE REPORTED. E. F.
