THE OBJECTIVES OF ARTIFICIAL-SNOW PRODUCTION FOR SKI PISTES IN THE ALPS ARE REVIEWED, TOGETHER WITH THE PREVIOUS WEATHER STUDIES REQUIRED, THE PRINCIPLE OF SNOW FABRICATION AND THE EVALUATION OF THE THERMAL POTENTIALITIES OF THE SITE. DIFFERENT PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES ARE DESCRIBED, AND THEIR TECHNICAL AND ENERGY CHARACTERISTICS ARE COMPARED. SOME INDICATIONS ARE GIVEN OF THE MAGNITUDE OF THE INVESTMENTS (BY MENTIONING THE CASE OF 9 FRENCH RESORTS) AND THE PROBLEMSOF WATER SUPPLY ARE UNDERLINED. J.R.
