IN 1988, ABOUT 50 FRENCH SKI RESORTS WERE EQUIPPED FOR ARTIFICIAL SNOW PRODUCTION. SEVERAL PLANT (COURCHEVEL, LES MENUIRES, MERIBEL, VILLARD DE LANS) HAVE AT LEAST ONE HUNDRED GUNS OPERATING SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH INSTALLED CAPACITIES OF 2,000 KILOWATT AT THE LEAST. THIS REPRESENTS INVESTMENT COSTS OF ABOUT 60 TO 100 F/M2 SURFACE AREA TO COVER WITH SNOW (IE 30 MILLION FRANCS FOR A LARGE PLANT) AND THE OVERALL COVERED SURFACE AREA IS NOW 4,300,000 M2. THE OPERATING COSTS ARE 2 TO 6 F/M3 OF SNOW. ARTIFICIAL SNOW IS ATTRACTIVE BUT IT IS STILL UNFAMILIAR AS A MATERIAL COMPARED TO NATURAL SNOW.
