Assessment of technologies for microclimate cooling.
Author(s) : NELLIS G. F., KLEIN S. A., EVANS J. C.
Summary
A portable microclimate cooling system for a soldier must satisfy a unique set of criteria. In the paper a number of cooling technologies are evaluated. The methodology for the modelling effort is to identify the fundamental thermodynamic cycle associated with each system and the components that must be integrated to implement this cycle. The characteristics of the components together with the thermodynamic properties of the refrigerant dictate the performance of the technology, assuring a meaningful comparison. A rating system is described that captures not only the quantitative performance of a technology (e.g. mass and thermal signature) but also its qualitative characteristics (e.g. safety and reliability). The result of exercising these models for operating conditions relevant to personal metabolic cooling systems are presented and the various technologies are compared.
