RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF ABSORPTION TYPE HEAT PUMPS AND REFRIGERATING MACHINES ARE ESSENTIAL FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF EXTRACTING EFFICIENCY ENERGY FROM LOW POTENTIAL HEAT SOURCES SUCH AS WASTE HEAT OR SOLAR ENERGY. THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ARTICLE IS TO EXPLAIN THE BASIC PRINCIPLE OF VARIOUS ABSORPTION CYCLES. IT DESCRIBES THE NEW REFRIGERANT AND ABSORBENT COUPLES SELECTED AS KEY FLUIDS. THE DUAL ABSORPTION, RESORPTION AND HYBRID CYCLES WITH MECHANICAL COMPRESSION ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
