Summary

Salt hydrates are widely studied as phase-change materials (PCMs) for medium-temperature thermal energy storage and cooling systems; however, their performance is limited by segregation phenomena that reduce cycling stability. Segregation has traditionally been attributed to incongruent melting, density-driven phase separation, and redistribution of crystallisation water during melting–solidification cycles. Here we revisit a known chemical process whose role in PCM degradation has largely been overlooked: hydrolysis-related reactions involving crystallisation water. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we evaluated the stability of selected first-row transition-metals salts for thermal energy storage applications.
