Summary

Brazed plate heat exchangers are being used increasingly in water chilling evaporators. They are made by brazing together a number of stainless steel sheets embossed by a herringbone pattern to produce water flow channels. High water velocities cause turbulent flow and good heat transfer characteristics. Total pressure drop is small because a number of short parallel circuits are available. The result is a compact chiller evaporator which packages neatly with an hermetic compressor. A number of such units may be coupled in parallel to provide a required duty. A space comparison is made showing that such a unit occupies a fraction of the space of a conventional shell and tube evaporator. D.W.H.
