Summary

The purpose of the paper is to introduce CAE (computer aided engineering) applications for the shell of hermetic linear/reciprocating compressors. Two types of analyses are mainly discussed, the stamping analysis and the BEM (boundary element method). The accuracy of modal analysis is increased using the thickness data from stamping analysis in comparison with the accuracy using the uniform thickness. For the BEM, two approaches for sound radiation analysis are suggested. The first one is sound radiation analysis using two-step BEM, calculating coupled interior first and uncoupled exterior later. The second one is the BEM using the surface data from experiment. The first two-step BEM is useful for a new shell design, and the second approach is for the estimation of the existing shell.
