Summary
The authors report calorimetric measurements on an untwinned single crystal of YBCO that have sufficient precision to clearly resolve the latent heat. Their data clearly demonstrate that a first-order phase transition takes place in the vortex state of untwinned YBCO. The coincidence of the calorimetric result with magnetic and transport data strongly suggests that this transition is due to the first-order melting of the vortex lattice.
