Carbon dioxide: where does it come from, where does it go to? The greenhouse effect: fiction and reality.

Le gaz carbonique : d'où vient-il, où va-t-il ? L'effet de serre : fiction et réalité.

Author(s) : FRANZ B., STOLL W.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

The authors summarize the problems of the greenhouse effect. They describe carbon cycles in nature (biological cycle, essential role played by oceans), climate history and past changes of atmospheric concentration in CO2, emissions of this gas by human beings and its use in industry, impact of other gases in low concentration and water vapour role. They study climatic changes on a world scale, highlighting the uncertainties which still damage the credibility of mathematical models of future climate change. Lastly, the authors suggest a number of precautions as long as the state of the art does not permit a more reliable understanding of the complex issues at stake. J.R.
