Summary

Conference pears are prone to develop cavities in the flesh in controlled-atmosphere storage. Experiments with trees at 5 sites over 2 years showed that the incidence of cavities was lower when the fruits were picked early in the harvesting period, and with a low ripeness index, than when they were picked 10 days later. When fruits were placed in controlled-atmosphere storage after a delay rather than immediately after harvesting, the incidence of cavities fell by 50-90%. Using these methods, Conference pears could be stored until the end of March.
