Summary

A COMPARISON HAS BEEN MADE FOR A 25 STOREY OFFICE BUILDING WITH 2 WATER OUTLETS PER FLOOR. THE CENTRAL CHILLER SYSTEM IS TIME-CLOCK CONTROLLED AND BECOMES A LOAD-SHEDDING OPTION FOR THE BUILDING ENERGY MANAGEMENT. HEAT REJECTED FROM IT IS USED FOR DOMESTIC WATER HEATING. UNITARY WATER COOLERS, ON THE OTHER HAND, ARE ASSUMED TO BE CONNECTED TO LOCAL POWER CIRCUITS AND THEREFORE ARE NOT EASILY TIME-CONTROLLED OR SWITCHED OUT FOR LOAD SHEDDING. ALSO, THE REJECTED HEAT BECOMES A LOAD ON THE BUILDING AIR CONDITIONING. THE COMPARISON COMES OUT QUITE DEFINITELY IN FAVOUR OF THE CENTRAL SYSTEM, BOTH IN CAPITAL AND OPERATING COSTS. D.W.H.
