Chilled water system optimization.

Summary

The author shows how control characteristics can be designed to optimize the performance of a large chilled water system involving a variable load circuit, a number of chillers with different performance and a number of cells in a condenser water cooling tower system. Initial concerns are to study the individual chillers in order to determine efficiencies at part load, variable chilled and condenser water flows and condenser water temperatures. Chilled water flow temperature was required as constant. Then the efficiencies of the cooling tower cells were studied with reference to water flow, air flow, condenser water temperature and entering air wet bulb temperature. These relationships could be modelled using simple regression analysis as available on most PC spreadsheet programs. The whole could then be amalgamated to determine the energy optimization for the total plant control. D.W.H.
