Closing knowledge gaps in R290 heat pump safety evaluation.

Summary

The use of F-gases is being regulated worldwide. As part of these regulations new options, for refrigerants, are being developed. Specifically, R290 is strongly favoured by European manufacturers. At Fraunhofer ISE a project (LCR290) (enArgus, 2023) was launched to support the further development of R290-based heat pumps for multifamily housing. The project will develop supporting material for safety concepts focusing on application to multifamily housing. The supporting material revolves around a decision tree which shows safety measures with corresponding solutions and the associated normative references from a European perspective. A decision tree for safety testing is presented and discussed. The discussion also includes in-depth explanation of certain measurement methods and test rigs, satisfying the corresponding regulations for the safety of a product. Finally, this contribution will present acquired measurement results, specifically focused on released charge dispersion behaviour and will give an outlook on next steps in safety research from the LCR290 project.
