Summary

New designs of compression packings are available for valve spindles. Packing rings may be made of graphite yarn, synthetic fibres, ceramics and ptfe, and may be moulded to carefully calculated specifications to give even stress distribution when loaded. Loading may be by various spring forms. Some spindles have two stage sealing, a monitoring point being included between the primary and secondary packings to give warning of leakage. Ball valve design is also discussed, emphasizing the importance of true spherical form. Seating materials are often polymers or elastomers. A special range of high integrity valves is mentioned for use with phosgene or chlorine. D.W.H.
