CO2 absorption enhancement by using methanol based Al2O3 nanofluids.

Summary
Recently, the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) has been extensively paid attention as a next-generation energy plant. The IGCC is a power plant system using synthesis gas (syngas). In the IGCC, it needs to be removed the acid gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from the feed gas streams. In this study, Al2O3 nanoparticles and methanol are combined into Al2O3/methanol nanofluids to enhance the CO2 absorption rate of the base fluid which is pure methanol. The absorption experiments are performed in a tray column and a bubble type absorber, both systems equipped with mass flow controller, mass flow meter and silica-gel (which can remove water vapour in the outlet gases). The parametric analysis on the effect of the particle fraction on CO2 absorption rate is carried out. The particle fraction ranges from 0.005 to 0.5 vol% of the Al2O3 nanoparticles. The maximum CO2 absorption enhancement compared to the pure methanol is obtained ~60% at 0.05 vol% particles. In addition, experiments are carried out to measure characteristics of particle size, pH and Zeta-potential of Al2O3/methanol absorbent. The Al2O3/methanol absorbent is expected to be a promising material for removing acid gases.
