The Code is the outcome of a series of UNEP consultative meetings for private sector parties convened between 1992 and 1994 in accordance with UNEP Governing Council decision 16/35, entitled "Toxic chemicals" and chapter 19 of Agenda 21. Extract of contents: general provisions (commitment to improved health, safety and environmental protection related to the international trade in chemicals); general principles and guidance for the their implementation (reducing risks; testing and assessment; quality assurance; classification, packaging and labelling; provision of information; education and training; advertising and marketing); monitoring and follow-up.
