Collaborative model for the design and construction of the QC-MAX.

Summary

Within the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, new innovative vessel designs intersect with regulatory, competitive and global adoption. This paper proposes the formation of an international consortium composed of a shipyard, shipowners, Classification Societies as well as the charterer to collaboratively design and formalize a new class of liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC), the Qatar-China Max (QC-Max). By leveraging collective expertise and shared interests, this initiative aims to establish a recommended design framework that balances innovation, safety, reduction of environmental impact, efficiency, interoperability and regulatory compliance. The proposed model seeks to address the challenges of multi-stakeholder governance, equitable participation and adoption. The success story demonstrates how standardisation and collaboration can result in innovation, experience sharing, reduce development costs and enhance safety and performance outcomes. The paper concludes with recommendations for replicating this model as well as insight towards future collaborative initiatives and standardisation.
