Comfort, cost and CO2: intelligent HVAC control for harmonising HVAC operating principles.
Author(s) : WALL J., WARD J. K., WEST S., et al.
Summary
Driven by significant worldwide challenges including climate change mitigation and peak electrical demand reduction, alternate HVAC operating principles are being considered, including a focus on energy efficiency, environmental impact and peak demand. Although determining how to best operate HVAC systems according to a sole operating principle is often intuitive, finding optimal combinations of HVAC system parameters when considering multiple operating principles is inherently more difficult. This is due to vast numbers of possible HVAC system parameter combinations and schedules, in addition to different and often competing goals of such principles. CSIRO is developing intelligent HVAC control technology designed to harmonise a trichotomy of key HVAC operating principles with goals of improving performance relating to cost, comfort and CO2. Encompassing multi-objective optimisation and machine learning techniques, sophisticated building models are utilised to determine optimal HVAC set-point values and operating schedules. This article details our latest work pertaining to this technology.
