Comparison between porthole and integrated reefer system containers from technical, operational and economic aspects.

Author(s) : WILD Y.

Summary

The technical and operational differences between the reefer container systems (porthole and integrated) are discussed. Specimen costing was carried out for the two container systems for a 500-TEU reefer container vessel. The effects of capital interest rate, the price of energy and the leasing component are shown, with the aid of the calculation model. Porthole containers were found to be about 20 cheaper to use than integrated containers. For porthole containers, the capital cost component is very high, whilst for the integrated system, high costs occur in the areas of maintenance and leasing.
