Comparison between the rotor-driven revolving vane expander and the cylinder-driven revolving vane expander.
Author(s) : SUBIANTORO A., OOI K. T.
Summary
A novel highly efficient expander design, called the revolving vane expander, has been introduced recently (Subiantoro and Ooi, 2009). The original design has three main components, namely the cylinder, the vane and the rotor. In the original design, the rotor acts as the driving component. In this paper, a design modification has been done by choosing the cylinder as the driving component instead. This paper is aimed to compare these two designs. It was found that the cylinder-driven design allows thinner cylinder walls as compared to the rotor-driven one. The cylinder-driven design also demonstrated lower vane side friction loss and higher mechanical efficiency (97.4%) than that of the rotor-driven one (92.8%) due mainly to the much higher inertia of the driven component (cylinder) of the RV-I expander as compared to the RV-II (rotor inertia). However, the downside is that the cylinder-driven design produces larger power fluctuation which results in high peak power production and at the high power requirement region.
