Summary
The paper deals with the sometimes unpredictable but pressing factors that lead to new technologies. Thus the "oil shock", which made manufacturers attach more importance to energy savings, and, today, ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect, which have brought on profound changes. The consequences on different refrigerating compressor designs are discussed.
