Summary

In small compressor production, the trend is towards scroll and rotary design, although reciprocating compressors remain in most European and USA domestic units and extensively in the small air-conditioning and commercial fields. Scroll compressors are taking over some of these markets in the larger sizes, particularly in Japan and the Pacific basin, where one company is making them down to a 1 hp size. Rotary units are becoming more popular. Hermetic designs are increasing to include twinned scroll units, inverter drives and, in one company, reciprocating units up to 34 hp. In the medium field, reciprocating compressors still occupy the largest area in semi-hermetic and open designs, though screws are becoming smaller and more cost effective. They are also taking over part of the centrifugal market due to easier conversion to non-CFC refrigerants. The centrifugal compressor manufacturers have taken various routes out of CFC usage. There has also been some movement towards absorption systems. Present compressor production capacity is underused, mainly due to recession. Competition is severe. D.W.H.
