Summary

The article reports on fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics, aimed at supplying information to find out the potential of numeric codes available on the market as design tools for systems of air distribution and control inside buildings. The main turbulence models, discretization methods, and calculation procedures are surveyed, with particular attention to the boundary conditions and the mesh patterns. As an example of the application of currently available computational fluid dynamics codes for evaluating indoor air quality, some numerical simulations are presented, including two rather unusual studies: the diffusion of methane gas due to a leak from a domestic appliance, and the spread of a fire in a two-story house.
