Summary

THE QUALITY OF THE WATER USED FOR COOLING TOWERS IS A BIG PROBLEM IN VERY LARGE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS BECAUSE NOT ONLY DOES THE WATER EVAPORATE, BUT IT ALSO BECOMES CONTAMINATED WITH BACTERIA WHICH CAN BECOME ENTRAINED IN THE CONDITIONED AIR SUPPLY. THE BACTERIA CAUSE A DISEASE WHICH IS NOW KNOWN AS < LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE > OR < LEGIONELLA > WHICH IS FATAL TO HUMANS. THE ARTICLE EXPLAINS THE PROBLEMS OF BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION, THE PROCESS OF TRACING THE SOURCE OF CONTAMINATION AND THE USE OF CHEMICALS TO HALT BACTERIAL GROWTH.
