Summary
Recent awareness of ill health associated with buildings has highlighted the absence of hygiene in engineering education. Legionnaires' disease has been a particular problem in Britain but several remedial actions are providing a cure: 1) increased knowledge of microbiology and epidemiology; 2) education: guidelines are now available from most professional bodies; 3) training: much effort is being spent better training and manuals; 4) legislation now requires a formal risk analysis and planned maintenance.
