Conversion of turbocompressor cooling station with R12 to the station with absorption cooling.

Summary

The cooling station of the Temelin nuclear power station (2 x 1000 megawatts of electric power output) in the Czech Republic, used for air conditioning purposes, was operated using 5 centrifugal chiller units employing R12 as a refrigerant. Therefore it was necessary to look for the replacement either for the refrigerant or refrigerating unit. Different proposals were considered. After evaluation of individual variants, it was decided to replace the existing refrigerating units by absorption water chillers, working with water as refrigerant and solution of lithium bromide and water as absorption medium. For the conversion of the cooling station, the basic requirement was set to utilize at maximum extent the existing equipment. The equipment had to be supplemented by a new working medium, i.e. by hot water system serving as heating medium. The new plant is fully described.
