Summary
At the TNO laboratories in Apeldoorn an experimental air cycle system has been built. Preliminary experimental results show an excellent performance of the plant, confirming the value and benefit of the concept. The experimental plant has a lower efficiency compared to vapour compression equipment. However, if in future the design of this machinery will be optimised to a level which is normal for other applications (isentropic efficiency of 0.8 to 0.9), the air cycle could be considered as competitive to existing vapour compression systems in energy terms as well.
