Air cycle refrigeration: back to the future? 3.

Author(s) : FLEMING A. K.

Type of article: Article

Summary

For food freezing, economies associated with recovered heat energy which the air cycle system can offer might make it quite competitive with conventional refrigeration systems. Other applications are reviewed, including land transport and cooling in aircraft. New developments for air cycle systems are described. Current developments include an air cycle heat pump, air conditioning and refrigeration systems at Bristol (England), a pressure wave machine as the primary compression and expansion device by researchers in Hanover (Germany), and an electronically commutated motor as a direct drive for high-speed turbo compressors. Future applications for air cycle refrigeration are presented with a special emphasis on combined heating and cooling.
