Cooling of small SMES system with forced flow supercritical helium.

Author(s) : SCHOTTLER R. M.

Type of article: Article

Summary

A small superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system is under construction. Six coils, forming a torus, store 1.4 megajoules of energy at 1360-amperes maximum current. The paper discusses the plant's capacility in different load cycles with respect to the refrigeration capacity. In addition, the pressure rise in the cooling tube during coil quench is investigated.
