DESCRIPTION OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST AND MOST AMBITIOUS HELIUM REFRIGERATING PLANTS: THE CRYOGENIC COOLING PLANT OF THE MAGNET SYSTEM OF THE HERA PROTON RING,IN HAMBURG (442 SUPERCONDUCTING DEFLECTING MAGNETS, 224 FOCUSING MAGNETS AND 1,300 CORRECTING MAGNETS OF VARIOUS KINDS). FOR THE MAGNET DEVELOPMENTS, A PROVEN NIOBIUM-TITANIUM ALLOY IS BEING EMPLOYED, WHICH MUST BE HELD AT A TEMPERATURE OF 4.2 K. DESIGN OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS. RECALL OF THE PRINCIPLE OF HELIUM LIQUEFACTION AND DESIGN OF A TURBOEXPANDER. EXTENSION OF THE OPERATION OF THESE TURBINES TO THE RANGE OF SUPERCRITICAL HELIUM. CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS PLANT AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO HEAVY TECHNOLOGY.
