Summary

This is a general article covering the types of corrosion to be found in heating and cooling systems within boilers and heat exchangers. It includes oxygen pitting, chemical corrosion, velocity scouring and impact problems, disrupting of protective coatings, scaling and dissimilar metal effects. Necessary treatments are suggested in general terms and the importance of monitoring is stressed. Design to avoid corrosion is illustrated by several case descriptions. D.W.H.
