Summary

Cooling water is a commonly neglected area of the hydrocarbon production process and is often responsible for substantial cost increases due to downtime, equipment damage, loss of process control and increased energy usage. Cooling water heat exchangers are vital components in most process plants and critical in operating ammonia and urea plants. Corrosion of heat exchangers and associated piping is a major problem in chemical process plants like ammonia-urea fertilizer plants. Key equipment, such as piping, valves, condensers and heat exchangers, can be degraded by corrosion attack of cooling water. Such attacks can reduce equipment performance and reliability and, in extreme cases, lead to unexpected failures and shutdowns.
