Summary
Rare-earth materials (pure substances, alloys, compounds and composites) are used in microcoolers in four applications: as working media in magnetocaloric microcoolers, as a medium for thermal storage in regenerators in thermomechanical microcoolers, as permanent magnet materials and as materials for magnetic circuits. The first two applications both dramatically improve the microcooler attributes and provide new properties. At present, many rare earth materials have been documented ; each of them has a relatively narrow optimum temperature range. Two databases on rare-earth properties are presented.
