CRYOBIOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF CALCULATING THE CHEMICAL POTENTIAL OF WATER IN PARTIALLY FROZEN SUSPENDING MEDIA.

Author(s) : PITT R. E.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE CHEMICAL POTENTIAL OF WATER IN A PARTIALLY FROZEN SUSPENDING MEDIUM IS CONVENIENTLY EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF THE OSMOLALITY OF THE UNFROZEN FRACTION, WHICH CAN BE USED DIRECTLY IN THE VOLUME FLUX EQUATION FOR CELLS. THE PAPER COMPARES DIFFERENT METHODS OF CALCULATING OSMOLALITY FROM TEMPERATURE AND EXAMINES THE EFFECT ON SIMULATED VOLUMETRIC BEHAVIOUR AND PROBABILITY OF INTRACELLULAR ICE FORMATION IN RYE PROTOPLASTS.
