Cryopreservation at large scale: current and future perspectives for applied cryobiology.

Author(s) : FULLER B., BROOKSHAW T., ERRO E., SELDEN C.

Summary

We have investigated cryopreservation at large scale (> 1 litre) for encapsulated liver cells. Cooling profiles were modified and recorded, and post-thaw functions were assessed in dynamic culture for 4 days. Although heat transfers were slower (>x5) than in typical small volumes, functional capacities were maintained post-thaw. Preliminary studies were also performed on cryo-cooling a new large volume bioreactor which retained structural integrity.
