THE BASIC LAY-OUT OF THE MACHINE AND ITS THERMODYNAMIC CYCLE OF OPERATION ARE GIVEN. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE REVERSED ERICSSON CYCLE IS COMPARED TO THAT OF THE REVERSED STIRLING CYCLE AND FOUND TO BE ALMOST IDENTICAL, THE OPTIMUM PRESSURE RATIO LYING IN THE RANGE 4 TO 6, FOR EITHER CASE. J. V.
