CRYOSURGERY: ADVANCES IN THE APPLICATION OF LOW TEMPERATURES TO MEDICINE.

Author(s) : RUBINSKY B.

Summary

CRYOSURGERY EMERGED AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY. DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY, NEW TECHNIQUES FOR PRODUCING LIQUID AIR AND HIGHER VACUUM HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. DESPITE THE POTENTIAL EMBODIED IN CRYOSURGERY, THIS TECHNIQUE IS NOT COMMONLY USED. THIS IS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE FACT THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO OBSERVE AND MONITOR AND THAT THE MECHANISM OF DAMAGE DURING CRYOSURGERY IS NOT UNDERSTOOD. RECENT ADVANCES IN IMAGING TECHNIQUES HAVE INCREASED THE ABILITY TO ACCURATELY MONITOR AND CONTROL THE FREEZING OF TISSUES. THESE ADVANCES, WHICH ARE DISCUSSED, HAVE LED TO THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION TO THE TREATMENT OF OTHERWISE INCURABLE TUMORS.
