Summary

Risk due to flammable refrigerant varies by its amount, circumstances and such. In addition, the environmental impact of refrigerant changes by using conditions such as annual leak rate and operating time. Fairly complicated standards seem to be necessary to utilize flammable refrigerants. Various domestic and international safety groups are on the way to establishing appropriate standards for flammable refrigerants, but it may take years to accomplish this.
